Gales Gallery, York University
Through painting and drawing, this body of work represents my LatinX family to probe, contest, address, and resist our colonial history to contribute to resilience, empowerment, and a nuanced LatinX identity in a visual format. This work is inspired by post-colonial Latin American history, the role of painting in perpetuating dominant colonial tropes, and engages with theories of the center and marginality. The paintings explore aesthetic strategies including haciendo caras (making faces), performing brownness, and parody, mimicry/ambivalence with the drawings explore a method of healing the colonial wound through visual creations.
